FIX: Windows 10 can’t type in search box

When Search does not work in Windows 10, programs, files, and folders can no longer be searched. Also, the search can stop answering at all, no one responds and freezes. How do we fix someone searching in Windows 10?

Since February 5, 2020, the search function in Windows 10 has worked for many users. No matter what you enter, the search window will be empty. Apparently disconnecting Bing’s search engine is the problem.  Web Search is disabled and only local search email addresses are shown:

  1. Press the key combination [Windows] + [R] to open the Run window.
  2. Press regedit and press Enter to open the registry.
  3. Confirm the message with “Yes”.
  4. Navigate to the key:  Computer \ HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Search
  5. Enter BingSearchEnabled for the name and press “Enter”.
  6. Double-click the new entry “BingSearchEnabled” and enter the value 0 if it does not already exist.
  7. In the same place, look for the entry “CortanaConsent” and double-click it. If the entry doesn’t exist, create it as you did for the BingSearchEnabled entry.
  8. You also set a value of 0 for “CortanaConsent”.
  9. Restarts Windows 10.

No more web search results

The search is now working again, but no longer showing web search results. If you be able to get the search results back over the Internet, you have to set the values of the registry entries “BingSearchEnabled” and “Cortana Consent” to a single again. However, the search will then not work at all until Microsoft corrects the problem.

Search does not work

Windows 10 should not search for files, the search fails. There can be many reasons for this.

  • Search is not responding.
  • The search did not return any results.
  • Search is too long or too short.
  • The search did not find any programs, files, or folders that were clearly present.
