FIX: Windows was unable to complete the format error

Occasionally, when Windows users are trying to format the USB flash drive or any external devices are prompted with an error message: Windows was unable to complete the format error. But worry not, you can fix this problem by using the solutions mentioned below.

How to fix the USB drive format issue?

Run a check disk scan:

  • Open the File Explorer
  • Insert the USB flash drive to scan
  • Click on This PC
  • Then right click on the usb flash drive
  • Now choose Properties
  • Choose the Tools Tab, and press the Check Button
  • If the automatic scan doesn’t start then start it manually by choosing the Scan and Repair Drive option

Remove wire protection using command prompt:

  • Press Windows key + X key
  • Then open command prompt and run it as admin
  • Now type the following command in the cmd:


list disk

Select disk type ( whatever disk number you want to select)

attribute disk clear readonly

  • Let the command run and then restart the PC

Format the USB flash drive with the disk management:

  • Press Windows key + R key
  • The RUN dialogue box will appear
  • Then type diskmgmt.msc and press OK
  • Right click on the USB drive on the Disk Management Window and choose Format
  • Now press the Yes button
  • Then choose a file system to format the flash drive on
  • Press Ok and Format the USB drive stick
